Chris provides commercially focused advice relating to obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights. He has particular expertise in patent and design law, and in the preparation of patent specifications, local and international patent prosecution, patent oppositions and patent validity and infringement analysis. Chris also provides IP audits and due diligence investigations, freedom to operate reports and assists in patent related litigation.
Chris has advised many different types of businesses and individuals developing or selling products in various areas of technology. For example, in areas including information and communication technology (ICT), software, business methods, Internet applications, many areas of physics, optics and optical communications, electronics and control systems, printer technology, microtechnology and nanotechnology, semiconductors, materials processing, photo-voltaic devices, solar technology, mining apparatus, and a broad range of mechanical devices.
Chris' Ph.D. research involved experimental research on developing a general materials processing / semiconductor production system using plasma based deposition/etching. This included the design and construction of various electronic, magnetic and optical diagnostic devices, radio-frequency electronic circuits, and developing analysis, modelling and control software. Chris' research also involved producing and analysing thin films, working with vacuum technology and high power radio-frequency antennas.
Chris has worked at a Canadian law firm and has also gained significant U.S. experience. Chris joined Davies Collison Cave in 1998 and became a partner in 2008.
He has advised on a range of renewable energy and cleantech products, including new photocatalyst and water purification nanostructures, solar cells, control systems for wind turbines, and carbon trading software.
