Ray has been in practice for over 40 years and has recently retired from the partnership where he was head of the engineering group of the firm and chair of the partnership. Ray's professional career commenced in the patent department of a large UK engineering company before moving to a UK patent attorney firm at which he was a partner for a number of years. Ray joined Davies Collison Cave in 1982. He still retains an active involvement with the firm mainly in a supervisory and training role.
Ray has academic appointments in the law schools at both the University of Melbourne and Monash University where he teaches patent and design law topics in the Masters programmes of both those universities.
