Rachel specialises in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the areas of molecular biology, virology, in particular molecular virology and viral vaccine development, medical biotechnology and immunology. She has been involved in conducting patent oppositions and advising on patent related litigation. Following her graduation from Waikato University with a Masters degree in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Rachel spent three years working as a research officer at the Dairy Research Institute (now Dairy NZ) in the Reproduction Group. Rachel's PhD studies were conducted in the field of molecular virology in the Veterinary Science Dept. of Melbourne University, where she investigated the antigenic structure and host cell receptor interaction of Equine Rhinitis A Virus. Rachel moved onto a 2-year post-doctoral position at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in their Structural Biology division investigating the structure and function of Malaria surface proteins. She then joined the Macfarlane Burnet Institute, studying the receptor binding and membrane fusion mechanisms of HIV and Hepatitis C virus. Rachel joined Davies Collison Cave in 2005.
